$30 Billion in Fresh Capital Sets a New Benchmark for OpenAI

The AI lab is seeking a massive private funding round that would value it above one trillion dollars, sidestepping an immediate public offering.

The path to going public is taking a back seat to private capital. OpenAI is reportedly closing in on another enormous round of private financing, a move that would push its valuation into historic territory while delaying a public offering that many market observers have been anticipating.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the artificial intelligence lab is currently negotiating to raise as much as $30 billion. This capital would arrive at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, a figure that would immediately make it the most highly valued private company in history. The fundraising effort is being spearheaded by Coatue, with additional participation from investors based in the UAE.

The specifics of the transaction remain fluid. Terms are still under negotiation and could shift before any deal is finalized. Previous reports from last month indicated that the company was seeking a valuation of $1.4 trillion for the $30 billion raise, suggesting that the final numbers are still being calibrated by the parties involved. OpenAI has declined to comment on the ongoing discussions.

Sources indicate that the involvement of investors from the UAE could be linked to broader strategic arrangements. The funding from that region might be coupled with an agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from the UAE, linking financial backing directly to the infrastructure needs required to run large-scale AI models. This potential arrangement highlights the critical relationship between capital investment and the physical hardware necessary for development in this sector.

Should this valuation hold, it would represent a massive leap from the company's previous financial milestones. In March, a funding round valued the maker of ChatGPT at $852 billion post-money. Following that raise, the company filed confidential paperwork for an initial public offering in June. While that IPO process is underway, the current drive for private capital suggests a strategy focused on securing significant resources before opening its shares to the public market.

A valuation exceeding $1 trillion would establish a significant benchmark for the company's eventual debut on the stock market. By raising such a substantial amount privately at this level, the company would be setting a high bar for what investors might expect when the shares eventually trade publicly. The reported deal is led by Coatue, along with investors from the UAE.

This high valuation could have ripple effects for other major players in the artificial intelligence sector, particularly Anthropic. While OpenAI is raising private funds, reports suggest Anthropic is closer to materializing its own public offering, with rumors indicating an S-1 filing could appear any day now. CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its public debut.

Anthropic's financial history is also marked by rapid growth. The company raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation, a round that was widely considered to be its last major private funding before an IPO. Like OpenAI, Anthropic also filed confidential paperwork for a public listing in June. The diverging paths of the two competitors, OpenAI seeking more private capital versus Anthropic moving toward public markets, illustrates the varying strategies currently at play in the race for AI dominance.
