Anthropic’s $965 Billion Valuation Inflates Early Backers' Stakes

Major venture capital investors are poised for massive gains as the AI leader prepares for a potential multi-trillion dollar public debut.

The anticipated initial public offering of Anthropic, projected to value the artificial intelligence firm at up to $2 trillion, stands to generate substantial returns for its investor base. Even before the public debut, the company’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion has already transformed early and late-stage positions into billion-dollar holdings. This upcoming listing represents a significant liquidity event for venture capital firms and individual investors who entered the market during the company's nascent stages.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, exemplifies the magnitude of these early entry rewards. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in the 2021 Series A round when the startup was valued at just $461 million. He currently holds approximately one percent of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is valued at nearly $10 billion, a figure that could increase further if the IPO achieves its upper end of the projected range.

Late-stage institutional investors have also secured significant equity positions, albeit at higher entry points. Iconiq invested $6 billion in the company last year, when its valuation stood at $183 billion. This substantial commitment now represents a $17 billion position. Analysts suggest that this investment has the potential to double in value upon the company’s public listing, highlighting the continued appetite for large-scale capital injections in the AI sector.

Long-standing venture capital partners have seen their cumulative investments grow substantially over time. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D financing, has committed over $1 billion to Anthropic across multiple rounds. Their aggregate stake is now worth $14 billion. Similarly, Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C and subsequently added $400 million. Although Kutcher departed the firm this year to launch a new venture, the original investors’ position remains worth billions of dollars.

Newer entrants to the cap table have also achieved rapid appreciation. Sequoia Capital first backed the AI lab earlier this year at a $380 billion valuation. By investing $3 billion, the firm secured roughly one percent ownership. This move has already resulted in a more than two-fold return on investment. Spark Capital, the only known venture firm with a board seat, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned to $7 billion, representing a return of more than ninety times the initial capital.

The financial trajectory of these investors underscores the rapid monetization of AI assets in the current market environment. As the company moves toward a public listing, the disparity between early entry valuations and current private market prices illustrates the high stakes involved in funding frontier technology. With the IPO expected to value Anthropic at the upper end of the $2 trillion range, these existing holdings are positioned for further appreciation, marking a pivotal moment for the venture capital industry’s involvement in artificial intelligence.
